the report describes the fabrication of an implantable left ventricular assist device designed specifically for intrathoracic implantation into humans. the current model vi lvad allows actuation by pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical drive systems under development by other dtb contractors. a total of 58 lvad's and 4 lvao shunts were assembled. fabrication processes were investigated and modified to improve rate of production, facilitate implantation, increase component durability, reduce cost and provide for maximum reuse of components. plate position sensors were incorporated into the lvad system. more rigorous quality assurance procedures were instituted. flow visualization and life testing facilities for lvad bladders were expanded and improved. blood interface development studies with mti and polyurethane coatings were continued. drive systems were modified to provide more monitoring and control devices interface activities continued with, and lvad's were supplied to, drive systems contractors to dtb
