concentrations of isophorone (78591), acetone (67641), xylene (1330207), and toluene (108883) were measured in the silk screen printing operation of the swinston company (sic-2262) in pittsburgh, pennsylvania on september 12 to 14, 1978. the evaluation was requested by an authorized representative of an unspecified number of employees of the company. breathing zone air samples and a medical questionnaire were completed. concentrations of acetone, xylene, and toluene were all below published occupational health criteria. one isophorone measurement of 25.7 parts per million (ppm) was above the osha 8 hour standard of 25ppm and could have caused the eye and nose irritation noted by an employee. the investigator recommends that a respirator be provided until local exhaust ventilation is improved, a respiratory protection program be established, protective clothing be worn, fire hazards be controlled, and the floor fan be modified
