a combined runoff recovery-evaporation pond system is optimized for maximum profit on uniform and nonuniform soil under cotton production. a volume balance hydraulic model simulates irrigation for combinations of the design variables (furrow rate and irrigation time). maximum profit is less, flow rate is higher but irrigation time is shorter with the nonuniform soil. soil nonuniformity depressed yield and slowed advance which increased applied volume runoff and deep percolation thus increased making the runoff sump and evaporation pond larger and more expensive. lower revenue from yield, higher costs of applied water and of the runoff recovery-evaporation pond system gave lower profit with nonuniform soil.
