the authors have studied applications of cd//1//-//xmn//xte semimagnetic semiconductors in thin-film waveguide devices. basic data that will be useful in fabricating optical isolators, as well as the results of calculations of waveguide characteristics are reported. the index of refraction, verdet constant, and magnetooptical birefringence due to the cotton-mouton effect at the wavelength of 633 nm are shown as functions of the mn content. the magnetooptical figure of merit is maximum at an mn content of x $equals$ 0.4. the results of calculations of the mode dispersion using the optical constants at x $equals$ 0.4 and calculated results for the film thickness versus $delta$ n for phase matching are also shown. the cotton-mouton effect can be used for phase matching. if the cotton-mouton effect is used as reciprocal conversion, it can be combined with the nonreciprocal conversion based on the faraday effect to obtain an optical isolator. 1 ref
