radiation-induced grafting of acrylic acid (aa) onto drawn polyester fiber was carried out with the mutual irradiation method to impart hydrophilic properties. it was found that grafting occurred smoothly without homopolymerization outside the fiber when a small amount of ferrous, cuprous, or curpic salt was added to the monomer solution. furthermore, the use of a swelling agent such as ethylene dichloride accelerated grafting to give a high rate of reaction even at room temperature. sodium salts of graft polyester fiber showed, between 5 and 15 graft, nearly the same moisture regain, wettability, and frictional electricity as cotton. above 10 aa graft polyester fiber was dyed homogeneously to deep color with cationic and disperse dyes. its sodium or calcium salt showed almost the same dyeability as the aa graft. 24 refs
