spectral and phytomass measurements were taken from cotton, soybeans, sunflowers, and guar throughout a growing season. a ground-based radiometer sensed reflected electromagnetic radiation in seven wavelength intervals (wli's) that included the thematic mapper bands. the seasonal spectral profiles for each crop were similar to the pattern of vegetative growth and senescence. ratio or linear combination indices, formed from two or more wli's, correlated equally well with phytomass data. a common linear regression for the four crops between spectral and canopy data had progressively lower coefficients of determination as the canopy architectures were characterized by crop cover, leaf area index, and foliage density. 9 refs
