this article describes a research study made to find a clothing for rescue teams that can provide protection for at least one hour under high-temperature conditions and that can protect the wearers against the effects of a flame from a mild explosion. an initial selection was made from the commercially available fabrics on the basis of laboratory tests which determined, under constant heat flow, the flame resistance and heat-flow resistance of these materials. a subsequent selection was made on the basis of wear tests under real rescue conditions. finally, exposure tests were conducted during roadway explosions, showing that, currently, the best outfit for temperatures below 30 $degree$ c is an outer garment from cotton moleskin in combination with an undergarment from $left double quote$ doppel frottee (schiesser) $right double quote$ soaked four times its weight in water. in french and flemish
