a series of polyester/cotton blend fabrics were studied with two isoperibol calorimeters of slightly different design. the measured heat release reached a minimum at the blend containing about 55 cotton, while the rate of heat release decreased linearly from 100 cotton to 20 cotton. the burning of a 100 polyester fabric showed characteristics distinctly different from those of the blends or the 100 cotton. polyester/cotton blend fabrics treated with condensed-phase active retardants were also investigated. results show that the action of these retardants were limited to the cotton component alone. effects of additional physical support using a glass fiber grid underlay on blend fabrics with or without flame retardant treatment, were also studied. 14 refs
