the efficiencies of binary flame retardant systems on 50/50 polyester/cotton blend fabric were evaluated with an isoperibol calorimeter. the two binary retardant systems studies were 1) diamonium phosphate (dap) and tris (2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate (t23p) and, 2) tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphium chloride with urea finish thpc/urea) and polyvinyl bromide (pvbr). the retardants were applied to the fabric, using the conventional pad-dry-cure process two treatment baths, each containing a different retardant of predetermined concentration, were used. results indicate that, for both systems, the combined retardant effect of the binary system is the sum of individual effects of the retardants in the system. no evidence of phosphorus-bromine interaction or synergism was observed from either system studied. the retardant efficiency of the thpc/urea/pvbr system is found to be lower than that of the dap/t23p system. 8 refs
