tensile strength loss from strips of cotton fabric (ctsl) inserted vertically into field soils is being used as an index of cellulose decomposition. examination of the technique for preparation and handling of strips before and after field placement, using five different soils, showed that sterilization by autoclaving is satisfactory provided control strips are given the same treatment immediate gentle washing of retrieved strips is not recommended, followed by dry storage for a minimum time. fraying of sub-strips is not essential provided strips are accurately cut to a standard width ctsl is predominantly microbial, but the possibility of microbial or non-microbial tensile strength increases must be considered. the presence of particular chemical additions or the growth of certain fungi could be responsible for increases in tensile strength during the insertion period of cotton in soil.
