one method of increasing the permeability of cement bonded monoliths is by adding natural or synthetic fibrous or straw-shaped materials. success in increasing permeability and reducing steam spalling tendency has been achieved by making additions of seeds, fish scales, wood fibers, cotton fibers, shredded paper, roots, pine needles, and natural and synthetic straws. because these materials have relatively large diameters, recent interest has been in synthetic fibers, such as polyethylene and polypropylene, where smaller fiber diameters are available. the proprietary synthetic fiber composition evaluated in this study was a copolymer of two thermoplastic resins
