fatigue testing of cotton and other materials demonstrated that a significant amount of heat is generated in the frequency range of 10 to 80 hz, although hysteresis measurements were not conclusive due to sloppiness in the hydraulic drive of the dynamic testing machine a second stage of experiments was carried out running two bouls in the umist laboratory supercalender. these bowls were of similar dimensions to those used as impression rolls in printing currency using an infrared camera and video-tape recorder, it was possible to obtain records of the surface temperature during operation. these results were compared with temperature standards and the resulting images subjected to automatic image analysis of obtain temperature pictures of the surface of the bowl. 3 refs
