two multi-purpose dams have been authorized by congress on the south fork and main stem of cottonwood creek, a tributary of the sacramento river in northern california. the corps of engineers used the computer model, hec-6, to evaluate the impact of the project dams on many of the channel characteristics such as sediment load, armoring of the bed, and degradation of the channel. particular emphasis was placed on evaluating the impact of the dams on the gravel beds which serve as anadromous fish spawning grounds. a gravel quarrying operation some distance below the confluence of the two forks was also incorporated in the model. finally, the relative magnitudes of the project impact and quarrying operation are compared. 6 refs
