this paper reviews the methods which can be used to assess the changes induced by a surface treatment of carbon fibres. in addition to the now classical methods like electron microscopy and composites properties measurements (interfacial shear strength, ilss), it is proposed to make use of the electron spectroscopy (esca) for determining the degree of surface oxidation and of the surface energy and active surface area determination.
