the possibility of biochemical oxidation of n-methylpyrrolidone (an organic solvent) at comparatively high starting concentrations was studied. the studies were done in a pilot aeration tank operating under a contact regime, with sludge adapted for two weeks. the progress of the biodegradation was evaluated from measurements of the bod and cod, and also by monitoring the dehydrogenase activity of the sludge. in concentrations up to 1200 mg/lit n-methylpyrrolidone does not have an adverse effect on sludge and can be biodegraded in aeration tanks. initially a process of adsorption on the active sludge dominates over the bio-oxidation process. 1 ref
