the present study was undertaken with the aim of elucidating the mechanisms behind the age-related decrease in maximum force, the decreased speed of contraction and the decrease in fast-twitch muscle fibre number in old rat soleus muscle. this muscle was studied with regard to contractile, morphometrical and enzyme-histochemical properties in 2- to 25-month-old male wistar rats. the results of the present study indicate that the age-related decline in tetanus force is due to a quantitative loss of contractile material. secondly, the decreased speed of contraction with age is primarily due to a qualitative change in mechanical properties of remaining contractile material rather than to a selective loss of fast-twitch fibres (edited author abstract)
