during solidification of tool steels, especially when casting large ingot sizes, segregations may develop, resulting in an inhomogeneous microstructure throughout the ingot section. remelting these ingots in an electrically heated slag and a uniform cooling rate in a water-cooled copper mould cleans the steel and makes it largely free from segregations. this not only improves the microstructure but also the material properties and performance of the tools produced therefrom.
