the literature on the use of fibers as supports for catalysts has been reviewed. in the past ten to fifteen years, considerable research has been conducted on the use of both organic and inorganic fibrous catalyst supports. much work has been done recently on the immobilization of enzymes by porous solid fibers and by hollow fibers. fibrous supports have the advantage over conventional supports such as beads of being able to be used in several forms, including chopped fibers, long filaments, yarns, and woven, knitted, and nonwoven fabrics. although large-scale commercial use of fibrous catalysts has not yet been reported in the literature, the volume of technical work and the potential shown by this work indicate that sizable commercial use for such catalysts may be well in the offing (author abstract) 51 refs
