in fabricating carbon composites the adhesion between a carbon fiber and matrix can be improved by employing a proper fiber surface treatment prior to the impregnation process. the treatment could be either oxidative or non-oxidative. these treatments are known to increase the interlaminar shear strength of the composite. the adhesion of matrix to fiber can take place by one or more of given mechanisms. the objective of this communication is to illustrate how two oxidation treatments, hto and lto, can modify the fiber surface and ultimately affect its relative contribution to the adhesion mechanisms. 6 refs
