in this study, the tg calendering technique was applied to multi-ply boxboard samples made from 100 recycled fibers. the effects of the following three calendering techniques on the surface properties and bulk of the board were investigated: 1. conventional calendering; 2. two-sided tg calendering; 3. one-sided tg calendering. experimental results show that tg calendering (two-sided) can produce the same bulk in a single nip as is obtained by conventional machine calendering in several nips. when one-sided and two-sided tg calendering were compared, it was seen that the surface properties on each side of the board were affected by the temperature of the roll contacting the surface and by the pressure in the nip but not by the conditions on the other side of the web, thus confirming that calendering is a roll surface replication process the major advantage of tg calendering (one- or two-sided) over conventional machine calendering is its ability to produce a boxboard having a smooth glossy surface with less reduction of bulk. 10 refs
