excimer lasers are very useful for ablation of material without creating thermal effects. this is because the high-energy uv light from these lasers breaks the chemical bonds in organic materials directly; and the pulsed mode of operation means that the exposure time is extremely short. the possibilities these properties open up for use in plastics fabrication are described. possible applications include cutting, drilling, surface treatment marking, scratching, ablation, deposition, dotting and lithography.
