a family of nickel-base beryllium alloys produced by ngk metals corporation is predominantly used in jewelry, dental applications, surgical instruments, and plastic and glass-industry tooling designated berylco, these alloys are known for corrosion and wear resistance, as well as their luster characteristics. the foundry characteristics of these alloys allow the investment casting industry to use these alloys where excellent surface detail is required investment casting allows close tolerances, minimal machining, intricate shape replication, and superior surface finishing in castings. the technology has been perfected to the point that many space-age materials, such as turbine engine components, are routinely fabricated by this technique. given the right material with required casting properties, production of near-net-shape components by investment casting offers the most economical route of producing engineering components. 4 refs
