shipbuilding today is a business where overcapacity worldwide has placed high demands on productivity in order that individual shipyards can remain competitive. one of the most effective ways of improving ship construction efficiency is to build in blocks and units which can be extensively outfitted with equipment in the safe environment of the fabrication shop, before final erection on the shipbuilding berth. these advanced construction techniques, however, have placed a new emphasis on dimensional accuracy of individual components and assemblies, since rework is undesirable and extremely expensive at the block erection stage. new fabrication techniques are, therefore, being sought to reduce rework in all stages of construction and to allow even more advanced modular construction. 6 refs
