improvements in flexural modulus, heat-deflection temperature, and notched izod impact strength are observed when surface-treated calcined kaolin reinforcement is used in the engineering compound silane loading levels are identified and compared for both medium and fine particle size kaolins. the performance-enhancing properties of surface-treated kaolins are illuminated by experiments involving: 1) nylon-6/6: a commercial polymer (dupont zytel 101l); 2) fine calcined kaolin: a specially prepared kaolin of 0. 8 $mu$ mean particle size; and 3) coarser calcined kaolin: a specially prepared kaolin of 1. 3 $mu$ mean particle size. 5 refs
