in this work the strain dependences of the first-and second-order raman spectra of high modulus (399gpa) apollo carbon fibres with 0x and 1x oxidative surface treatments have been studied the spectra were taken with 15mw of the 488 nm line of an ar laser the high value for the strain dependence of the second-order raman band, a $minus$ 24 cm** $minus$ **1 shift for 1 strain, means that this mode will be useful for evaluating strain distributions in carbon fibre composites. this is the largest such shift so far reported for any polymer or polymer-derived fibre. the intensity of the second-order raman band is approximately 75 of the most intense first-order band and its breadth is less than twice the value of that band. 21 refs
