chemical modification can greatly improve the biological resistance and dimensional stability of wood products. application of this technology to wood composites eliminates problems associated with solid wood, such as drying, chemical penetration, and chemical recovery. aspen flakeboards made from flakes to about 17-percent acetyl weight gain show no attack after 1 year in fungal cellar tests with brown-, white-, and soft-rot fungi or tunneling bacteria. these same boards swell in water at a much slower rate and to a lesser extent than untreated control boards. the most promising application of chemical modification at this time appears to be in thick fiberboards used in external application.
