many materials, components, and products are not suitable for consumer use directly after fabrication. their surfaces may be too rough or unattractive. they may be too soft or poorly resistant to corrosion or wear. they may have too high a friction coefficient or poor absorptivity and emissivity. thus, some form of surface treatment or coating is generally necessary to finish the materials a project was undertaken to assess the state of the art of metal-finishing techniques, particularly those for applying metallic and nonmetallic coatings. using a helpful classification scheme, this report evaluates the current and future roles of metal pretreatment, surface-coating, and postreatment methods.
