author reviews some recent changes in the field of investment casting and makes some predictions for the industry's future growth the technique - as exemplified by the lost wax process - has many inherent advantages. since an expendable pattern without split lines is used, limitations on design complexity are minimised, particularly if designer and producer properly liaise with each other. the use of special cores allows the incorporation of complex internal passageways in the casting - an approach greatly used in gas turbine blade design. tight dimensional tolerances can be held, while the surface finish is better than in most competitive processes. castings can be produced by the investment route in most metals and alloys these benefits add up to a powerful, accurate casting process that can compete technically with other casting methods, with forgings and with fabrications and, in many cases, offer substantial cost savings to the designer
