various surface treatments used for mechanical finishing of stainless steel (sheet, plate, tubes) are described. tensile strength, surface hardness, thermal conductivity and work hardening properties of the steel affect the finishing process to be used, as do the reasons for finishing (aesthetic, hygiene, corrosion resistance). surface finish is quantified in bs 1449. mill processes include hot and cold rolling, annealing and pickling mechanical processes (including grinding, polishing and buffing) are not an exact science although surface roughness can be measured
