although a wide range of biomedical applications are currently met by synthetic elastomers, only polysilicones and poly(ether-urethane)s have extensive usage. the syntheses and properties of these materials are reviewed, and chemical modifications aimed at improving their performance, in particular their haemocompatibility, are described. it is apparent that, especially in the case of cardiovascular prostheses, both fabrication techniques and chemical structure play important roles, but at present their effects are poorly understood and require much more systematic experimental investigation.
