there is no easy solution to many of the problems with dimensional stability in woven fabrics, but a better understanding of their nature should help both cloth manufacturer and garment maker to overcome some of them, or at least avoid the application of inappropriate remedies. piece-dyed fabrics are an especial source of difficulties, and in extreme cases, consideration should be given to abandoning piece dyeing in favor of top or yarn dyeing, and accepting the extra cost of fabrics made by the latter route. it should likewise be understood that a little instability is a good thing, and that a wool fabric possessing moderate values of hygral expansion will be more formable and enable garments to be produced whose appearance is superior to garments made from more stable fabrics. 20 refs
