gate velocity and cavity fill time are the most important parameters that affect the quality of the castings. an equipment has been fabricated to measure the plunger velocity during casting and the data is used for calculating gate velocity and cavity fill time under these settings, castings were produced to find the effect of these parameters on the casting finish. the casting finish has been measured using a perthometer and the surface profiles have been traced using a perthograph. it is observed that the castings produced with gate velocities greater than 40 m/s and cavity fill time of less than 20 m/sec yield good quality castings with a surface finish of 5 microns rms peak-to-peak while the worst castings yield surface finish of 20 microns rms.
