many of the early developments in using lasers in machining revolved around high powered co//2, ruby, and nd-glass lasers. such systems have cornered a share of the sheet metal fabrication market, but are not suitable for precision drilling. for small holes, such lasers can only be used in a 'direct drilling' mode where the laser is focused to the diameter of the hole required and vaporizes the material. this is a 'violent' process which is difficult to control and produces a heavy recast layer with poor surface finish. based on substantial in-house experience with the development and use of laser drilling systems for sub-contract work. amchem has recently delivered a laser machining center designed primarily for use on combustion chamber linears. using a yag laser, it avoids many of the problems cited
