this brief review is restricted to chemical sensors that are suitable for the direct monitoring of clinical data and, therefore, potentially valuable as diagnostic tools, but that are not yet in widespread use (i. e. , primarily ion-selective and enzyme sensors) the use of integrated-circuit technology for the fabrication of chemfet devices and other sensors makes possible the availability of small, robust, solid-state chemical transducers at sufficiently low cost that one-shot (use-and-dispose) applications are not prohibitively expensive; furthermore, it should eventually be possible to incorporate a wide range of analytic devices, including sensors for blood gases, enzymes, ions and possibly, immunologic components, onto a single silicon chip. indeed, integrated-circuit chemical sensors with on-chip data multiplexing and temperature compensation (inter alia) have already been produced. 28 refs
