the spectra of original and modified quartz fibers with specific surface areas of 1-5 m**2/g have been measured. the position and intensity of the absorption bands of molecularly adsorbed water (3420 cm** $minus$ **1) and silanol groups in the fine pores (3650 cm** $minus$ **1) are changed by chemical modification, vacuum-thermal treatment, or deuteration with d//2o. hydrothermal treatment or treatment with aqueous solutions of nh//4oh or nh//4f reduce the surface area of the quartz fiber, and lead to the development of ultrapores. 24 refs
