the utility of lignin by-products from chemical pulping operations for synthetic polymers is usually pictured as one relating to lignin's depolymerization to simple $left double quote$ feedstock $right double quote$ chemicals or to its use as a low-cost extender however, lignin's inherent properties as fiber reinforcement and adhesive have furnished it with characteristics highly desirable for a multitude of products. the utilization of these properties for polyurethane products has been studied, and it was found that lignin may indeed serve as the backbone for high-performance semi-rigid polyurethane foams, adhesives and coatings. efforts are reported that have concentrated on raising the level of lignin incorporation into polyurethanes via the polyol as well as the polyisocyanate component. 9 refs
