the method of component referencing for circuit diagrams recommended in bs:3939 gives no indication of component location unless the references are silk-screened onto the circuit board these are unavailable when prototype circuits are built on general purpose matrix boards, using dil sockets and wire-wrap or pen-wrap inter-connections. a method of component referencing for use in circuit development assumes that the user can recognize components by their symbol alone without qualifying letters
