ureolytic cells were immobilized on cotton cloth using polyethyleneimine. the cells when coated with polyethyeneimine were found to flocculate, and the flocs were found to adhere stably to cotton cloth. a contact time of 1 h was found to be necessary for cell binding, even though considerable binding was seen immediately after soaking the cloth in polyethyleneimine-coated cell flocs. the ph optima did not change significantly on immobilization. the cell-bound cloth retained 80 of the original activity, even after 10 reuses for the hydrolysis of urea. these adhered cells have been used in a continuous bioreactor with half-life of 15 days for the degradation of urea.
