there are still no reliable signs of a recovery in important customer industries for fibre products in the us. the clothing sector is suffering from the general economic uncertainty. the sales volume of fibres and filaments for this sector has declined noticeably since the 4th quarter 1990. yarn and fabric imports, especially from asia, which have benefited from the development in the us dollar exchange rate, caused a marked deterioration in employment and earnings in the textile industry. the downturn in automotive production is adversely affecting business in textured and flat polyester filaments. apart from the economic downturn in countries outside germany, the loss of export sales to downstream production stages in eastern european countries is having an adverse effect
