study of cotton cellulose nitrates by the spin-probe method

the temperature dependence of the correlation times for the rotational diffusion of a spin-probe in cotton cellulose and in the products of its nitration has been studied. in all cases, the dependence consists of two sections of different slopes, the temperature corresponding to the change in slope increasing from 265 k for cellulose to 323 k for its nitrates with a degree of substitution of 2.60. the thermal transitions in cellulose and in its nitrates have the same characteristics and are connected with the onset of mobility in pyrane rings. a number of stages involved in the way in which the parameters of the cellulose porous structure change during nitration has been distinguished.
