the treatment of weathered cotton with various lubricants has enabled easier processing of such cottons. although a number of commercial lubricant finishes were effective in improving the processing of rain damaged cotton, several were found to perform better than others under the conditions employed. three lubricants, two commercial silicone-based softeners, and an ester, butoxyethyl stearate, (bes), were found most effective. all finishes were found to decrease fiber-to-fiber friction to the extent that yarn breaking strength was adversely affected. the addition of trace amounts of colloidal silica was found to increase fiber to fiber friction and, hence, yarn strength but at the expense of processing ease.
