wheat, grain sorghum and cotton were planted with various planting dates, depths, starter fertilizer rates, and rear press-wheels. results suggest that the main effects and some interactions of these variables significantly affect crop emergence effects varied among crops, but improved emergence requires planting depth control, limited in-row starter fertilizer rates, and selection of rear press-wheels and downforce on those wheels. the results are related to the development of sensors, controls, and mechanisms relative to soil conditions, planting depth, and seed firming on planting machines.
