the successful operation of in-vessel (mechanical) and windrow systems depends on the mixing of large amounts of sawdust bulking agent with sludge cake to increase the porosity and to adjust the moisture content of the composting mass. possible alternatives to sawdust include leaf and yard wastes, rice hulls, cotton gin trash, shredded waste paper, and other agricultural wastes (corn husks, peanut shells, straw or hay). the subject study investigated the use of bedding straw obtained from a thoroughbred racetrack in southern california as a substitute for sawdust used in windrow composting tests evaluated straw and sawdust for impact on internal temperatures, drying rates, disinfection, volume reduction, odor generation and product quality. 3 refs
