**1**3c nmr study of cellulose nitrates

cellulose nitrates of various degrees of substitution, prepared by nitration of cotton and wood cellulose in different acidic media have been studied by high resolution **1**3c nmr in solution. the relative contents of elementary units differing in number and position of nitrate groups were calculated from the integral intensities of spectral lines corresponding to the cl nucleus. a model was proposed for the heterogeneous substitution reaction, relating the degree of substitution to monomer composition through the relative reactivities of the hydroxyl groups on the 2nd, 3rd and 6th carbon atoms of the repeating unit.
