amylose nitrates of various degrees of substitution are synthesized and the **1**3c nmr spectra are studied in solution. a full interpretation is given of all the signals of the **1**3c nuclei, and the contents of mono-, di-, tri- and unsubstituted $alpha$ -d-glucopyranose units in the amylose nitrate macromolecule are determined. it is established that the reactivity of the hydroxyl groups in the nitration of amylose decreases in the order c//6 $greater than$ c//3 $greater than$ c//2.
