the national crop loss assessment network (nclan) determined that soybeans were more sensitive to ozone than other major agricultural crops, including corn, wheat, and cotton. however, new jersey scientists in two recent reports question the validity of the nclan results since the utilization of a different method to assess the impact of exposure of ambient o//3 on soybeans failed to show significant yield losses. the new jersey reports prompt concerns about methodology since in these studies there was no test of the antioxidant edu in charcoal-filtered air to determine whether edu per se applied under conditions of low o//3 concentrations reduced yields of soybeans. the author cites his own research showing that edu per se may reduce yields especially when applied under conditions of little or no o//3 stress. 12 refs
