although natural fibres are clearly the original 'geotextile', for some years they have been overshadowed by the newer synthetic materials for geotechnical work. today the pendulum swing of customer preference in terms of personal fabrics has moved back to natural materials such as cottons, wools and linens, so in geotextiles the client is beginning to appreciate that the original grounds on which such materials were discarded could in fact be an advantage. for embankments and cut slopes where there is a need for some form of earth reinforcement during the initial period of consolidation of remedial measures to local instabilities, then according to availability a number of natural materials could be utilised. there are a number of forms of erosion control materials which have been developed with the use of natural fibres
