studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of cotton feed position and grid spacing on the trash removal and cotton wastage characteristics of a two-saw stick machine. cotton feed position was found to have a large influence on cotton losses, but little effect on trash removal. a feed position after top center of the cleaning saws produced a cotton wastage level that was almost twice as great as that obtained by a position before top center. increased agitation of the input cotton at the before top center position apparently improved the uniformity of loading on the saw cylinder and reduced cotton losses through the cleaning grids. variations in spacing between grids in a six-grid configuration significantly affected trash removal by both cleaning saws and cotton losses by the primary saw. an evenly spaced grid arrangement, however, provided the best balance between trash removal and cotton losses.
