a water management study was conducted on the west side of the san joaquin valley to investigate the interaction of irrigation water management and drain flows in an area with a perched water table cotton was grown for three years. data were collected which described the water balance, crop yield, water table response, and drain flow. the results of this study show that significant quantities of water can be extracted from a saline perched water table by cotton. the data show that irrigation timing has a significant effect on plant water use from the groundwater.
