the reversible complexation of valonia cellulose with ethylenediamine was investigated by high-resolution cp/mas **1**3c n m. r. spectroscopy and the previously unreported spectrum of the cellulose-i-ethylenediamine complex is presented. this spectrum shows only single resonances for each cellulose carbon atom, consistent with previous indications of a unit cell containing two almost identical chains with twofold screw axis symmetry. the chemical shift of the c-6 carbon of the complex at 62. 2 ppm indicates a conformational change, relative to the starting cellulose i, for the hydroxymethyl group of the anhydroglucose repeating unit aqueous washings of the complex remove ethylenediamine and regenerate cellulose i. however, the **1**3c n. m. r. spectrum of the resulting material no longer resembles that of the starting valonia cellulose, but is similar to spectra observed for cotton cellulose and for cellulose i//i//i//i.
